The Prophet’s birthday

The Prophet’s birthday or the birth of the Messenger is an annual commemoration on the day of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad bin Abdullah on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal according to the most famous sayings of the Sunnis, or the 17th of Rabi’ al-Awwal according to the Shiite view. Where Muslims celebrate it every year in some Islamic countries, not as a holiday or worship, but as a joy at the birth of their Prophet, the Messenger of God, Muhammad bin Abdullah. Where popular celebrations begin from the beginning of the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal to its end, by setting up councils in which he sings poems in praise of the Prophet, and in which lessons are from his biography, his merits are mentioned, and food and sweets are served, such as the sweetness of the birth.


In most Islamic countries the Prophet’s birthday is observed on 12 Rabi’ Al-Awwal 1444, which is the third month of the Islamic calendar. This year, this date falls on Saturday, October 8.
